Backyard BBQ Chicken

This is a very simple recipe that uses simple ingredients that you probably already have in your cupboard. Even though this recipe uses very basic ingredients the outcome is a tender juicy piece of chicken that’s a favorite for the kids, or in my case the grand kids. No kids? No worries this recipe is sure to please everyone young and old alike. Backyard BBQ chicken means that grilling season is officially open.

This is one of my favorite recipes because it’s so simple and I don’t have to worry about complicated side dishes. I usually just ask my wife to make her world famous potato salad (at least it’s famous in my world) and I toss a few ears of corn on the grill. A couple of sodas for the kids and a couple of beers for the adults and you have the perfect weekend meal.

So folks let’s get this show on the road
Ingredients:
  • 4 – 6 Chicken legs or thighs
  • ½ tsp Salt
  • ½ tsp Black Pepper
  • 1Tbsp Garlic powder
  • 1 Tbsp Onion powder
  • 1 Tbsp Paprika
  • Your favorite sweet and tangy BBQ sauce
Directions:
Prepare your grill for indirect cooking and preheat to 350- 375F
In a small bowl combine salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder and paprika. Sprinkle liberally all over chicken legs. Make sure to cover all areas of the chicken with the seasonings.
Pour the BBQ sauce in large bowl and set to the side.
Tip: Chicken skin will drip fat on the charcoal and cause flare-ups
Cook on indirect heat for 10 minutes turn and cook another 5 minutes.
Remove from grill and place into bowl with BBQ sauce making sure to coat entire chicken leg with sauce. Place back on the grill (indirect heat) for another ten minutes turning once halfway through. Internal temperature should be 165-170F.
Tip: Always use an instant read meat thermometer when cooking poultry.
Remove from grill and serve. You may want to let it cool for a few minutes if you’re going to serve it to small children.
Note: You can adjust recipe as needed to more or fewer servings.
