Cleaning Your Charcoal Grill

This is very important, yet it is something that many of us overlook. Cleaning your charcoal grill is fairly simple and should be done after every use.

Why Should I Clean My Grill?

It helps to prolong the life of the grill and it also help to keep unwanted pests from building their new home in your grill. where they can feast on the leftover food that happened to fall through the grates. These pests can leave droppings that can spread disease.

Also, you don’t want that $30.00 filet to taste like the fish you grilled last weekend. Do you? So, be sure to clean your grill especially if you plan to store it away for the winter.

Cleaning Your Charcoal Grill

What you need:

  • Depending on what type of grates you have on your grill, you will need either a wire brush(for stainless steel)or a nylon brush(for porcelain coated cast iron).
  • A bucket of water with a non abrasive detergent.
  • A damp cloth or non abrasive sponge.
  • A clean dry towel.

Cleaning The Grill Grates:

Heat Grill grates for at least 10 minutes with the lid closed then brush with wire brush(for stainless steel) use a nylon brush for coated cast iron since a metal brush can cause damage to the coating and may cause it to chip or peel this can lead to rusting on your grill grates. Be sure to clean off any leftover food from the grates. Oil the grates using a paper towel and vegetable oil.

Cleaning Inside The Grill:

Once the grill cools remove and dispose of any old charcoal and ash from the bowl of the grill. Clean the inside of the bowl with a wet cloth or sponge. a non abrasive cleanser may be used to remove to remove any stuck on grease or residue that may be inside the bowl. I don’t recommend using harsh chemicals or oven cleaners as this may damage some coatings and shorten the life of your grill. If using a cleanser be sure to rinse the inside of the grill to remove any residue the cleanser may leave behind.

Cleaning The Outside:

Wash the outside with warm soapy water and rinse and dry with a clean dry towel.

Note: If you plan to store your grill outside for the winter I recommend using a Grill Cover. to protect it from the elements.
