Grilling The Perfect Steak
In this post I’m going to share with you how to grill the perfect steak on a charcoal grill. The process is quite easy and doesn’t require you to be a grill master, but everyone will think that you are.
Okay, so you are going to need a few things and they are.
1. A Good Charcoal Grill
I’m assuming that you already have a good grill. But if you don’t, the Weber 22 inch Original Kettle Charcoal Grill is perfect for the charcoal grilling beginner.
2. A Good Steak
You’ll want to have a steak that is at least 1 to 1½ inches thick with a nice red color and abundant marbling. See choosing The Best Steak For Grilling. If you don’t know where to get good prime steaks for your grill. Snake River Farms has a good selection of great steaks for the backyard barbecue as well as competition meats for you pros out there.
3. A Good Thermometer
Yes I said a thermometer. I know there are a lot of tricks out there on how you can tell when a steak is done without poking a hole in it. But we are beginners, so save yourselves a bunch of headaches and just use a Thermometer. You won’t lose that much precious juice.
That’s all you need. So let’s get started.
First season you steak. If you have a good steak you don’t need to ruin it with fancy rubs or marinades. A little salt and pepper will do just fine.
Prepare your grill.
I put charcoals on only one side of the grill. The other side is used for medium to well done steaks so that they don’t burn on the outside. The charcoals should be completely covered with white ash before putting your steak on the grill this should take about 15 to 20 minutes or longer. I usually let them go for 30 to 45 minutes.
Grill Your Steak
Once the coals are ready, place your steak on the grill directly over the coals and close the lid. It’s important to keep the heat in.
Let the steak cook on one side for 5 minutes, This sears in the juices. Try not to open the lid and peek inside.
After 5 minutes the steak should be ready to flip. Use tongs to flip your steak and cover the grill again.
Let the steak cook for about another 4 minutes.
After 4 minutes your steak should be done to a perfect medium rare. But check it with a thermometer just to be sure.
The internal temperature should be 140°F to 145°F for medium rare.
NOTE:
For medium to well done steaks. Move the steaks to the side of the grill without charcoals and continue to cook until your desired doneness. Check the internal temperature.
There you have it folks. A simple and easy way to grill the perfect steak. That wasn’t so hard now was it?
Just remember, if you want to get a good steak off the grill, put a good steak on the grill.
